DB-750 DB-1000 Asahi Kasei PMMA End-Glow Fiber Optic Cable

The DB-750 / DB-1000 is an Asahi Kasei step-index plastic optical fiber (POF) built around a polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) core with a fluorinated-polymer cladding. Delivered as a bare end-glow fiber on a reel, it carries light along its length and emits it from the end face, which is why it is the standard light-guiding medium for fiber optic star ceilings, curtains, falling-water effects and other decorative lighting, as well as for short-range links that are immune to electromagnetic interference.

Key Characteristics

  • PMMA core (polymethyl methacrylate) with fluorinated-polymer cladding
  • Step-index profile and a numerical aperture of 0.5 for straightforward light coupling
  • Core refractive index 1.491, cladding refractive index 1.40 (Asahi Kasei structure)
  • DB-750 fiber diameter 0.75 mm; minimum bend radius 10 mm
  • End-glow emission, flexible, non-conductive and safe near water
  • Supplied in continuous lengths on a reel, typically 3,000 m for DB-750

Typical Applications

Paired with an LED illuminator, end-glow PMMA fiber builds star-field ceilings, fiber curtains, chandeliers, waterfalls, hotel and KTV decor, signage and large-screen displays. Because the fiber carries no electrical current, it is intrinsically safe in wet, confined or high-voltage-adjacent locations. The same fiber also handles short-distance signal transmission where complete immunity to EMI is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this a bare fiber or a jacketed cable? A: This listing is the bare end-glow fiber on a reel; black-jacketed versions are available for routed installations.
Q: What diameter is DB-750? A: 0.75 mm. DB-1000 is 1.0 mm, and the wider DB family spans 0.175 mm to 2.0 mm.
Q: Does it need an LED light source? A: Yes for lighting - an illuminator couples light into the fiber and the end face then glows.
Q: Can it transmit data? A: Yes, PMMA POF supports short-range, EMI-immune optical links.
