TB-500 Asahi Kasei 0.5 mm PMMA Plastic Optical Fiber for Sensing

The TB-500 is a Asahi Kasei 0.5 mm plastic optical fiber intended for optical sensing and signal pickup, guiding light to and from a sensing head in electrically noisy or space-constrained equipment.

Because the optical path is non-conductive, the TB-500 provides electrical isolation between connected equipment and can be routed past motors, drives and power wiring without picking up noise.

Key Characteristics

  • Standard length: 6000
  • Certified to Reach, ISO9001
  • Attenuation rated at 0.16 over the operating wavelength
  • Minimum bend radius: 10
  • Operating temperature range: -20~70
  • IP68 ingress protection for damp or wash-down environments
  • Withstands vibration and repeated movement on moving carriages and robots
  • Immune to EMI and safe around high-voltage and high-noise machinery

Typical Applications

The TB-500 is commonly used for through-beam and reflective presence/position sensors in machines, level and edge detection where the electronics must stay remote, and fiber-optic probes for pressure and process measurement. The result is a reliable, repeatable build that tolerates the routing, vibration and repeated handling typical of production installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is POF used in a sensor? A: Light is launched through the fiber to a sensing head; the returned or interrupted light is measured by a remote amplifier, keeping electronics away from the target.
Q: Can the sensing end be placed near high voltage? A: The fiber is non-conductive, so the sensing tip carries no electrical potential and is safe in high-voltage areas when the amplifier is mounted remotely.
Q: What affects sensing range? A: Fiber diameter, bend radius, head geometry and the amplifier's optical power set the detection distance; larger cores generally collect more light.
Q: Is it affected by motor noise? A: No. Because the signal is light, EMI and RFI from motors, contactors and inverters do not couple into the fiber.
